Beijing’s Khan Kon shows that fan run gaming conventions can work in China.

The weekend of the 25th, Beijing saw something new—a gaming convention both digital and physical, organised by and for the fans. In a country where “convention” usually means advert booths manned by the seemingly obligatory scantily clad women and little else, Khan Kon offered something fairly new.

Organized by a mixed staff of local and expat volunteers, Khan Kon resembled the kind of conventions more typical in the West, but the mostly Chinese crowd seemed to embrace it regardless. This is the convention’s third year, but the first to bring digital gaming into the fold, sharing floorspace with the tabletop games that had made up the focus of the previous two events.
